The Copacabana Fort: a pleasant surprise in Rio de Janeiro

The Copacabana Fort in Rio de Janeiro was designed at the end of the nineteenth century to make up the defensive system of the city of Rio de Janeiro and its harbor. Its main function within such a system was to prevent the approach of enemy ships that could threaten the entrance to the Guanabara Bay.

The site chosen for the construction of the Fort was named the promontory of the small church, where there was the Church of Our Lady of Copacabana.
