With organized traffic, an efficient formula for public transport and multiple green spaces, Curitiba has become a metropolis model for the country and an interesting tourist town.
Along with the bus lanes and parks came new postcards like the Wire Opera House, the Glass Palace in the Botanical Garden – and recently the Oscar Niemeyer Museum. Traditional cantinas ‘Santa Felicidade’ today are just folkloric close to the full of the attractions tours.
It’s a delight to discover that there is a large Brazilian capital that actually works so well.
When to go
Winter is very cold and relatively dry. An excellent combination to enjoy the cuisine of Ukrainian immigrants, Polish, German and Italian – and take a submarine, the beer with a petard traditional Steinhäger of the German Bar in “Largo da Ordem”.
In the spring and summer humidity increases.
Fall is perfect to enjoy the parks and get the best weather on the coast, just over an hour’s drive away.
The biggest cultural event takes place in March: the renowned Curitiba Theatre Festival.
How to get
The airport is located in São José dos Pinhais, less than 20 km. Direct flights from São Paulo (Congonhas and Guarulhos), Rio de Janeiro, Campinas, Foz do Iguaçu, Maringá, Londrina, Florianópolis, Porto Alegre, Caxias do Sul, Belo Horizonte, Brasília , Asuncion-Uruguay, Buenos Aires and Miami.
By road, the city is 400 km from São Paulo (only 30 km aren’t duplicated ). Joinville is 110 km; Camboriú, 210 km; and Florianópolis, 300 km.
The best access to Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) is in Pontal do Sul, 120 km; go down the road to Paranaguá.
