On the second day we head to the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons in Atacama desert. Located some 110km south of the town of San Pedro de Atacama and 28km southeast of the town of Socaire. The lagoons are part of the flamingos national reserve and are administrated by the Atacamenian community Socaire.
We woke up early and at 7:30 am we were already on the road. A good tip is to take a good coat, because the desert is very cold in the mornings and the evenings. About 90 minutes later we’re on the road and surrounded by mountain ranges and salt flats – ponds with water with high salt concentration – impossibly blue skies and no clouds, really beautiful.
When you arrive at the lagoons the feeling’s that you’re in a kind of impossible paradise with lakes between mountains and volcanoes and an overwhelming silence, a very peculiar landscape. We had breakfast looking at this landscape and then we walked for a while in the park.
After we entered the van again and visited the Laguna Chaxa, also part of the flamingos national reserve. A large white plateau with some salt flats where flamingos feed for about 14 hours a day to continue their migration to the south.
